Duke Energy Corporation operates as an energy company in the Americas.
It operates through three segments: U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas, Commercial Power, and International Energy.
The U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas segment generates, transmits, distributes, and sells electricity in central and western North Carolina, western South Carolina, southwestern Ohio, Indiana, and northern Kentucky; and transports and sells natural gas in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky.
This segment supplies electric service to 4 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers with approximately 152,200 miles of distribution lines and a 20,900 mile transmission system; and sells electricity on wholesale to incorporated municipalities, electric cooperative utilities, and other load serving entities.
It generates electricity through nuclear, coal-fired, hydroelectric, combustion turbine, and natural gas plants, as well as a solar power plant.
The Commercial Power segment owns, operates, and manages power plants, as well as engages in the wholesale marketing and procurement of electric power, fuel, and emission allowances related to plants.
This segment also retails electricity to customers in southwest, west central, and northern Ohio.
The International Energy segment owns, operates, and manages power generation facilities; sells and markets electric power and natural gas; and produces natural gas liquids, methanol, and methyl tertiary butyl ether.
This segment serves retail distributors, electric utilities, independent power producers, marketers, and industrial/commercial companies.
The company also develops, owns, and operates a fiber optic communications network, primarily in the southeast U.S., serving wireless, local and long-distance communications companies, Internet service providers, and other businesses and organizations.
Duke Energy Corporation was founded in 1916 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
