U.S. DOE on What’s Next for Domestic Fossil Fuels

Among the key issues facing the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is what to do with carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants and whether to allow exports of the nation’s abundant natural gas resources. Charles McConnell, DOE’s assistant secretary of energy for fossil energy, will explain the department’s plans to make the most out of domestic fossil fuels.

Sino-American Solar Trading Tensions Soar

Tensions between the U.S. and China regarding solar energy trading continue to flare, and in a new finding the U.S. Commerce Department says Chinese companies exporting to the United States are illegally dumping solar panels to gain a larger share of the American market. In response, the Commerce Department is calling for tariffs in excess of 30 percent on Chinese solar panel imports. Tim Brightbill, attorney with Coalition of American Solar Manufactures, and Jigar Shah, chairman of the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy, will debate the implications of these new developments.

Offshore Wind Energy Transmission Gets Go-Ahead

The U.S. government has given the go-ahead to a Maryland-based company to put together plans for a $5 billion transmission line that will carry electricity from wind towers off the mid-Atlantic Coast. This is good news for advocates of offshore wind power, but the industry still faces many challenges, including harnessing air currents and soon-to-expire government subsidies, among others. Jim Lanard, director of the Offshore Wind Development Coalition, sits down with Platts Energy Week to discuss wind energy’s progression.

From Houston, Platts Managing Editor Samantha Santa Maria explains the Southeastern United States’ shift towards more coal-to-gas electric power switching in light of low natural gas prices.
